2018: A Year Well-Lived

How do I top the awesomeness of last year? It’s a yearly dilemma every time I write my annual year-ender blog posts. This is especially true for this year. I mean, 2017 was pretty remarkable! It was the year I became a legit food writer, got featured in Bride and Breakfast (twice!) and MoneySense Magazine, hosted two celebrities’ baby showers, got pregnant, gave birth, and more. That’s pretty hard to beat! But as I was looking back on my memories for 2018, I realized that there’s no need to outdo the previous years, really, because every year, there will always be new victories and new blessings, and all of them are worth honoring. And as I was drafting this post, I realized that the personal and professional triumphs that deserve to be celebrated are not just the big ones or the impressive ones. Even the smallest and simplest feats deserve to be highlighted. So that’s what I’m doing now!

My wins in 2018:

MY FIRST BIRTHDAY AS A MOM

Turning 34 was and will always be pretty special for me because it was my first birthday as a momma. I didn’t have a grand party but I did feel grand because I spent it with my family and friends, and that was the only gift I really needed, and the only kind of celebration that I wanted. It was quiet but meaningful, and I felt complete.

View this post on Instagram

This might be my most low-key and quiet birthday. If you know me well, you know that 'quiet' is not a word that represents me best. I'm also admittedly not a very private person. But this year, I decided to hide my birthday on social media. The reason was simple: I wanted to see who would really remember my birthday even without being prompted by Facebook… you know, just like how it used to be back in the day! ("Back in the day"… Wow, I really AM old! 😂) . . The result? I was not bombarded with hundreds of notifications, which also meant that I made better use of my precious time instead of scrolling through my wall for hours. More importantly, I had more appreciation for those who sent me their well wishes even without the convenience of a reminder. Quality over quantity: Despite the decrease in the greetings I received this year, I don't feel less loved. In fact, I feel MORE loved. I read a quote once that goes "Beautiful things don't ask for attention." I know that now because when you are really living a beautiful life, you don't need validation in the form of numbers. . . For those who don't know, I was born on February 29 (I'm a leap year baby). For someone who's missing an actual birthday this year, I feel truly complete. After all, it's my first birthday as a mom and I got to spend it with the best husband in the world! Life is good and turning 34 is not bad at all! . . Thank you to those who made me feel special on my not-birthday! ❤❤❤ #birthday #birthdaygirl #34thbirthday #leapyearbaby #family

MY FIRST MOTHER’S DAY

Aside from my birthday, Halloween, and Christmas, this was the one event that I was really excited for! Hey, moms have a tough job! In fact, it should be Mother’s Day everyday! I didn’t have any fancy celebrations but we did have a simple family lunch at Banana Leaf.

View this post on Instagram

Having the best of both worlds for Mother's Day: family time AND me time. Lunch with @migwashere and @andromedaevesmith (Mike was swamped with work last week so we only got to go out today) and home service massage in the evening while Mike took Andi out for a walk and fed her. 👪 As an added bonus, Andi slept through lunch so I didn't have to breastfeed her while eating (which means I got to eat with both hands!) and she complained about being hungry only after I've finished eating! 🙌 Thanks, @migwashere for the gift of your precious time and @andromedaevesmith for the gift of your cooperation! 😀💕 Can it be Mother's Day everyday please? #MothersDay #AndromedaEveSmith #FluffySpacePrincessAdventure #PuffAndFluffAdventure #mylittlefamily

Baby Dove also gifted me with the best Mother’s Day gift: a photo shoot with Andi! Thanks to them and Little Heartbeat Photography, I now have these beautiful photos with my baby girl that we will both cherish forever.

I've always wanted to be a mom. Even as a young girl, I've always known in my heart of hearts that being a mother is one of my greatest dreams. So when I found out that I was pregnant with @andromedaevesmith, I was extremely delighted and I did everything I could to prepare for the arrival of my little miracle. People told me that motherhood can be hard. Boy, I had no idea! Even with all my meticulous planning, I was never fully prepared for how tough it all really was. Motherhood is such a wonderful thing, but it also comes with 'the uglies.' Pain. Exhaustion. Frustration. Disappointments. Judgments. Comparisons. Self-doubt. But despite all of this, being a mom is, without question, one of the most rewarding things that has ever happened to me. Sometimes, I still can't believe that I was put in charge of taking care of this beautiful human being. I can't even remember what life was like before Andi. It's surely a different life now, a life that entails a lot of challenges and sacrifices, but it's a life that I love and I would never trade it for anything in the world! 💙💙💙 Thank you, @babydoveph for encouraging moms like me to trust our own instincts in raising our children, for recognizing our efforts, and for reminding us that there are no perfect moms, just real ones. Thank you for making my very first Mother's Day even more special by gifting me with this photo shoot, which was truly a memorable experience. And thank you to @jayjaylucas and @felizlucas of @littleheartbeatphotography for taking these adorable photos. This is a gift that Andi and I will truly treasure forever! . @littleheartbeatphotography is offering a 10% discount for my friends and family who want to have gorgeous photos taken, just like this one. Yayyy! It's Mother's Day! Officially my new favorite holiday! 😁 Whew! Motherhood is a real game changer! I've traded late night parties for late night feedings and nappy changes. I used to always want to get out of the house, now I couldn't wait to get home. I used to sleep for as long as I wanted, anytime I wanted, and now I sleep late at night and wake up in the wee hours of the morning to pump and clean baby bottles and clothes! @andromedaevesmith, look what you made me do! How can such a tiny person make such big changes in one's life? Love — it really makes you do crazy things, doesn't it? Andi has really opened up and expanded my heart, and taught me how to love fiercely and boundlessly. I feel so blessed to have been called to be a mom, the most noble and fulfilling profession of all! To be constantly needed and depended on for love, comfort, food, attention, and security, and to be seen as a hero, to have another human being look at you like you're the greatest person in the world in their eyes, and to be someone's whole world… there's really no feeling quite like it. ❤❤❤ Yes, it comes with struggles, it's not always pretty, smooth, and sunny all the time, but every part of it is beautiful in its own way… because every part of it teaches you how to love a little deeper. Thank you, @babydoveph, for taking off the pressure to be perfect and for encouraging us moms to keep it real… because there are no perfect moms, just real ones. Thank you for celebrating my first Mother's Day with me by giving me this photo shoot. Thanks also to @littleheartbeatphotography for capturing this lovely photo of me and Andi. Most of all, thank you, @andromedaevesmith, for making me a mom. ❤ I am honored to be your mama, best friend, yaya, security guard, photographer, stylist, clown, entertainer, baby carrier, tour guide, pillow, bed, alarm clock, human ATM machine, and cow! 😂 . BEING A LEGIT MOM BLOGGER

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while now, you’ll see that I write mostly about food, travel, and my random musings. And then I became a mom, and all of a sudden, I’m the expert on the best diaper brands and the most gentle soaps for your baby’s sensitive skin… except that I’m NOT an expert. I’m just a regular mom. I’m just a new mom who’s still learning the ropes in this motherhood thing. And yet, for some reason, brands and PR companies approached me, sent me gifts, invited me to their events, and trusted me enough to be a sort-of spokesperson for their products and services. To be honest, sometimes, I still ask, “Why me?” I’m not famous. I don’t have millions of followers on social media. I don’t exactly live an enviable, fabulous life. And like I said, I’m NOT an expert on motherhood. So when I look back on the opportunities that have opened up for me as a mom blogger, I am in awe. In a sea of other more distinguished influencers, these brands and PR companies chose me to represent them and spread the word about them. And for that, I am humbled and very, very grateful. What really amazes me is that people actually read my posts, listen to and trust my opinions and recommendations, and consult me when they have any questions! I get to help other moms (and even those who are not moms) through my content! And another bonus? Meeting other people (especially other moms) who have become good friends of mine!

Here are just some of the brands I have worked with in 2018:

Bath time is the best time! 💙 @andromedaevesmith LOOOVES being bathed. When she's cranky, all I have to do is put her in her tub and all of a sudden, she calms down and starts smiling! Bathing before bedtime is her nightly routine. To make her bath even more enjoyable, I sing or talk to her, put on some relaxing music, and use @mustelaphilippines products that not only smell AMAZING but also work so well in caring for her NORMAL SKIN. I clean her nappy area with Mustela Cleansing Wipes and the No Rinse Cleansing Water, which I also use on her face after her bath (and any time of the day when needed!). To clean and soften both her hair and body, I use the versatile 2-in-1 Cleansing Gel. After I dry her off, I moisturize her skin with the Hydra Bebe Body Lotion and apply the Hydra Bebe Facial Cream on her face. And finally, for a good night's sleeep, I massage the Soothing Chest Rub on her chest. The refreshing pine scent can help any baby easily drift off to slumberland. ☺ I love bathing her with Mustela products and seeing how happy she is when she's feeling fresh and clean. I'm thankful for these Mustela products that pamper her normal skin and keep it soft and supple. 💙 I found my baby's skin type, have you? I'm not the only one who's ecstatic about receiving these delicious (and effective) lactation cookies! 😊 I'm not exaggerating when I say that I crave for these babies sometimes coz they're really yum! Last week, because my craving was so strong, and because I needed to rebuild my milk stash ASAP, I ordered a dozen Classic Milking Bombs through the @honestbeeph app. Unfortunately, because I couldn't stop eating them, I ran out of cookies in just a matter of days. Oops! 😂. So this new box of treats came at the perfect time! ❤❤❤ Thank you so much, @milkingbombsbyabc, for sending over more of your treats! ❤ This is really such a nice surprise! 😊 // Swipe left to see @andromedaevesmith getting excited about the cookies #MilkingBombs #MilkingBombsByABC #AndromedaEveSmith #FluffySpacePrincessAdventure

How FUN was yesterday's #PampersXLazadaPH event? SUPER FUN! ☺ @celestinegonzaga talked about why she loves @pampersph and how convenient it is to order them online from @lazadaph. I got to see my mom blogger friends and meet new ones. But the best part of the day was seeing my @andromedaevesmith and all the other kids play, explore, and have fun. It was easy to see that they were all having a good time, crawling, running, jumping, and moving with ease. One thing they all had in common was that they were all wearing Pampers! #LessLawlaw means they can just #GoGalaw without feeling restricted and awkward! Happy International Babywearing Week! 😊 Babywearing is such a BIG part of my mom life! I honestly don't know how I can survive motherhood without our @iangel.ph carrier! ❤ Someone on Instagram messaged me before and asked if it's worth getting this carrier. Let's see… I can eat, do house chores, work, supervise client meetings, do my makeup, go shopping, visit different places, attend events, go dancing, etc. …all while carrying Andi! So… is it worth getting an @iangel.ph carrier? For me, anything that lets a busy mom multi-task and get things done is a good investment, a life-saver, and a sanity-saver! 👍👍👍 Bonus: sometimes, she sleeps when I wear her in the @iangel.ph. And you know what it means when the baby is sleeping: You can get MORE stuff done. 😉 . . . . . #happyinternationalbabywearingweek #internationalbabywearingweek #babywearingweek #iangel #iangelph #iangelswelove #AndromedaEveSmith #FluffySpacePrincessAdventure #SkippyAndJoeyTime #babywearing #babywearingph #wearallthebabies

@andromedaevesmith's first ramp modeling stint… at 9 months old! 😁 We walked the 'runway' at the Wear Is The Love Segment of @infantinobaby_ph for the @mommymundo ExpoMom North wherein we showcased the different models of the Infantino carrier. Mine is the Go Forward model, their most high-end model, which features the comfort of 4 ergonomic carrying positions, and can be used for babies from 8-40 lbs — that's from newborn up to the toddler stage! Thank you for making us a part of this cute fashion show, @mommymundo and @infantinobaby_ph! And thanks to @omniandbryce for capturing the 1st photo and the video. When you receive a beautifully packaged gift box that's bigger than your baby, what's your immediate reaction? Mine was "Oh wow!!!" followed by "I can't wait to open it!" then followed by "But it's so pretty, I don't want to open it!" Haha! It took a while, but eventually, @andromedaevesmith and I DID open this pretty gift set from @nivea_ph, and we were so elated with what was inside: a complete line of gentle and hypoallergenic baby products! 💙 Caring for Andi's delicate skin is a priority for me because I know that healthy skin = happier baby (and happier mommy too because I don't need to constantly worry!). I am able to protect her skin and keep it soft and healthy thanks to these products from Nivea Baby! 😊 (And I get to keep the cute box for myself and put my stuff in it. I know, right? That's such a mom thing to do! Heehee!) 😁 Thank you, Nivea Baby, FUSE, and @johnpaulgalicia for this lovely present! . . #NiveaBabyPh #NiveaBaby #AndromedaEveSmith #FluffySpacePrincessAdventure

BEING INVITED AS A SPEAKER ABOUT PREGNANCY AND MOTHERHOOD

This was a pretty cool experience! Thank you, Baby Dove and Mommy Mundo. 🙂 I really enjoyed sharing my two cents and my experiences to the soon-to-be parents in the audience.

View this post on Instagram

During today's #PregnantPause by @mommymundo and @babydovecare, I, together with 3 other beautiful mommies, spoke in front of a big crowd of expecting parents and talked about our pregnancy stories and experiences as a first-time mom. It felt like a big responsibility to talk about topics like these coz I don't even consider myself an expert! (Yes, I still fumble and am still clueless about a lot of motherhood-related things) But I guess that's what soon-to-be moms (and dads) want to hear sometimes — not the advice, opinions, and anecdotes of experts, but of normal, real moms like me! 😊💙 I hope the audience learned something valuable and useful from me today! Thank you for the opportunity to share my thoughts, Mommy Mundo and Baby Dove. Thanks also to @teambridgespr. That was fun! #MommyMundo #PregnantPause #BabyDovePh #RealMoms

FIRST TIME TO BE A BRIDESMAID

This was actually the second time that I was supposed to be a part of someone’s wedding entourage (hello, Mother Mikee!), but the first time, I was not able to go because I had just given birth. I think being chosen to be in someone’s bridal party is a pretty big deal because it means that the bride regards you as one of their best friends, and this will always be special to me because it’s my first time! So to my good friend Mina, thank you for this wonderful experience and of course, the honor of being one of your ‘maids!

HOSTING EVENTS (A.K.A. BEING A WORKING MOM)

Even before I got pregnant, I was already prepared for the possibility that I might not get to host as many events anymore. I knew that in some ways, having a baby could hold me back a little and I also had to be selective about the opportunities that I take. But I didn’t mind the decrease in my gigs because I really got to choose quality over quantity. And the events that I did host for 2018, I will always be proud of them. I am also thankful for these jobs, as well as the people who trusted and recommended me for these jobs, because they helped me provide for Andi’s needs and give her a good life. I just want to say that being a working mom is not always a walk in the park but it is definitely possible!

I wish I could post ALL the events I hosted for 2018 but it will take up too much time and space, so I’m just posting some of my most unique and interesting events from last year.

Proud to have hosted the 2018 AIDEA Awards Night. AIDEA is one of the most locally and globally recognized architectural firms in the Philippines and has constantly been included in the World Architecture 100 list. They are the geniuses behind some of the country's most renowned establishments such as the Marriott Hotel, Kidzania Manila, Crimson Boracay, Anvaya Cove, Serendra, Bonifacio High Street Central, and more. It was a night of impressive talent as the firm's best employees received well-deserved recognition and were floored by the powerful performances of Firechill (a circus performer who has entertained crowds at Cirque du Soleil and Okada Manila's World of Wonders) and Aia de Leon of Imago! #HostingByNadine #AideaAwardsNight #AideaAwardsNight2018 #Aidea

When I was still pregnant with @andromedaevesmith, I used to go to @mommymundo expos to shop for baby stuff. And I thought, "I'd love to be able to host one of their events one day! They're so fun!" Just 3 days before their event, I was asked to host it. Mission accomplished! Thank you, Mommy Mundo, for allowing me to host Expo Mom 2018: #Mompowerment. Aside from getting to score some of my favorite products at discounted prices, I really learned so much about so many things — from nutrition down to financial empowerment. ❤ Weekend well spent! DOING MORE VOICE OVER WORK

I have done voice-overs in the past but 2018 was the year when I got to work on VO projects of all kinds — digital ads, internal corporate videos, TVCs, radio ads, and animatics. I’m very thankful to the production companies and clients who believed in my talent and made my work so easy and enjoyable! (That includes Soundesign, Digitank Studios, and Rocket Concepts)

OUR FIRST FAMILY STAYCATION

I’ve been itching to travel ever since I gave birth, but as you know… priorities! The closest we got to having a family holiday was going on a staycation at Eastwood Richmonde Hotel. Funny, the hotel was just down the road from where we live. Haha! The room we were in was kind of crappy, but as long as we were together, that’s what mattered. Also, it was Andi’s first time to go swimming, and watching her splash around the pool in glee was one of the highlights of our little ‘getaway.’ Can’t wait to travel with Mike and Andi for real next time!

FIRST OVERNIGHT / OUT OF TOWN GETAWAY WITH MIKE (JUST THE TWO OF US!) SINCE ANDI WAS BORN

Alone time with my husband nowadays is a luxury. With a clingy baby, no helper, and no one to entrust her with most of the time, date nights have become very rare. But Mike and I were lucky enough to have had the chance to go on a ‘minimoon’ (mini honeymoon) last December when I hosted the wedding of our friends Stefan and Lu-ann. Sure, it wasn’t really a ‘date date’ because I was primarily there for work, but it was still a break from our parenting duties and it was still considered ‘we time’ so I was more than happy with that. So how did it go? Read the caption in this Instagram post:

View this post on Instagram

My last wedding hosting gig was also like a "mini honeymoon" for me and Mike because it was the FIRST TIME EVER that the two of us were away overnight without Andi. (Thank you, Stefan and Lu-ann, for arranging our accommodation!) It felt so different. Good different. We had a restful and uninterrupted sleep for the first time since Andi was born! It was sooo nice! But at the same time, we missed Andi so much, especially since there was no WiFi and no signal so we couldn't keep tabs on her. We braved the rain and went out in the dark at night just to look for signal but to no avail. We ended up just spending our alone time together watching her videos and looking at her photos on Mike's tablet. 😂 The next day, when I finally got some reception, I got some Viber messages from my mum-in-law, who was in town for a week and took care of Andi while Mike and I were away. Swipe to see her 'timeline.' 😂 Yep, Andi was awake from 2:00 AM to 6:00 AM, then woke up again at 6:40 AM! Mum said she (Andi) kept looking at the door, as if waiting for us to come through it. She was such a good girl though. She was just playing the entire time. The only time she cried was when we did a video call with her (see last photo) because she realized that we were still away. 😂 Thank you, Mum @itsyourmam for looking after Andi without even complaining despite the fact that she kept you up the entire night/morning! Mike and I really, really needed this quick break. ❤ We felt recharged after! I wish this could be a monthly thing! 😊 #PuffAndFluffAdventure #AndromedaEveSmith #FluffySpacePrincessAdventure #minimoon #parentsdayout

HITTING MY 1 YEAR MARK IN BREASTFEEDING

Mike once said to me: “I didn’t think you’d last this long.” He said that not to belittle me, but to express his amazement. You see, my pain tolerance isn’t exactly great. Case in point: I once had a Brazilian wax and my best friend was waiting for at the lobby of the waxing studio. After my session, she said to me: “I could hear your screams and your swearing. It was like you were being murdered in there.” You get the point. The first few weeks of breastfeeding were the hardest and most excruciating. Once I got past that, it did get easier, but there were always challenges along the way – from clogged ducts to keeping up with Andi’s increasing demand but having very little or no time to pump. Just recently, just when I thought nothing could go wrong, there was a stage when she was using my nips as her teether, and I would literally bawl in pain while nursing. I really thought that that was the end of my breastfeeding journey. The pain was unbearable and I wasn’t sure if I still had it in me to go on. But I did go on. And here I am now, still exclusively breastfeeding. I would have been happy with just 6 months, but with God’s grace, the encouragement of family and friends, the support of brands that promote breastfeeding (I’ll save that for another post in the future!), I was able to breastfeed Andi for one year… and counting!

View this post on Instagram

Some days, I enjoy breastfeeding. Some days, I dread it… just like these past few days. Andi now has 4 teeth and she's turning me into a human teether (an upgrade from being a human pacifier), leaving me with cracked, sore, and bleeding nips. (Sorry, TMI). My pain tolerance is really low, and when she latches, I sometimes cry from the toe-curling pain. Lately, I've been offering her the bottle with my expressed milk just to give myself a break. (Thank God for baby bottles!) But even after she's had her fill, she'd still want to latch. She doesn't just want milk. She wants ME. She's not hungry for food. She's hungry for comfort. And that comfort can come only from ME. I feel terrible when I have to reject her when she reaches out to me, with her pawing at me while saying "Mama…" 😭 So despite the pain, I give her what she wants — no, what she NEEDS — and just take it like a man. Wait, let me change that. "I take it like a WOMAN" should be more appropriate coz if there's anything that breastfeeding has taught me, it's that women are strong, especially when it comes to caring for their children! 💪 📸: @rheiaramosyeophotography . . #breastfeeding #breastfeedingjourney #AndromedaEveSmith #FluffySpacePrincessAdventure

Hello, August! Happy #breastfeedingmonth! Choosing to exclusively breastfeed @andromedaevesmith has been one of the hardest but best decisions I've ever made. I've never really been a hardcore breastfeeding advocate (for me, fed is best, regardless of how you do it) but sometimes, I look at how healthy, active, happy, and smart Andi is and I can't help but be amazed and think, "Wow! Breast milk can do that?!" I really do believe that this is one of the most priceless gifts I could ever give my daughter. And as strange as it sounds, breastfeeding is now one my passions because this has become a special and unique way for me to bond with her. ❤ . In honor of #nationalbreastfeedingawarenessmonth, this August, I'll be sharing and writing about my favorite breastfeeding products. Plus, stay tuned for some giveaways… because you breastfeeding moms sure deserve a little token for all your hard work! . (Pretty and breezy nursing top from @pangga.online. ANDI’S DEDICATION AND FIRST BIRTHDAY

Wow! Mike and I raised a one year old! It’s a pretty big accomplishment, to think that we were once clueless, fumbling parents who didn’t know how to calm down a fussy newborn! Whew! We survived our first year as parents! It was such a treat watching our bright and beautiful little star grow right before our eyes and witnessing all of her milestones.

View this post on Instagram

My Fluffy Space Princess is ONE YEAR OLD!!! 😊😭 Every month, I write a long list of your milestones. But today, there's no need for that because turning one is an incredible milestone in itself! There's so much to say but my heart is so full of you that if I try to tell you all the things you mean to me or remember all the times you made me fall head over heels in love with you, I might cry… just like I did last night while looking at all your baby photos. 😭 In fact, it took everything I had not to cry while doing this little photo shoot. I can't believe it's our last one! I can't believe you're ONE! What an amazing privilege to be put in charge of someone as perfect as you, and to be the mom of a little angel who brings so much light, joy, and love to so many people. I love you so much, my little star. Happy 1st birthday!!! . . Thank you, @iamericmagnus and @jcloms for this space suit. You gave this to her when you visited us at the hospital the day after she was born. I was saving this for a special occasion, and that day has come. She's ready to explore! 😊 #AndromedaEveSmith #FluffySpacePrincessAdventure #firstbirthday #oneyearold

We celebrate her everyday, of course, but since her first year was very special, we celebrated that with a simple birthday party with family and friends who were there for her during the first year of her life. The party, which also doubled as her child dedication, was held at J Cuppacakes, a very pretty and homey restaurant in SM Jazz. I really had fun organizing this despite the busy holiday season (which was also my busiest work month)! It was so heartwarming to see how loved Andi is by the people who attended her big day and helped make it perfect! I’ll write another post about this event because there are way too many people to thank. But for now, here are a few photos from our photographers, When Worlds Collide! I promise I’ll blog about this soon and post more photos!

And that was my 2018! It was sometimes fun yet sometimes tough, and it had its fair share of ups and downs. But for the most part, I can say that it was a year well-lived because I may not have everything, but I do have what I needed to be happy and content. I was WHOLE. Thank you, 2018, for giving me a life that I will always be proud of.

Clearly, our 2018 was all about Andi. Obviously, our world revolved around her. Before she came, our life "highlights" (or "best nine") consisted of awesome milestones like travels to new destinations and major career breakthroughs. Then we became parents, and as our priorities changed, so did our life and our lifestyle. Honestly, I thought that our new life wouldn't be as "exciting" as before, but I was wrong. It was just a whole new level of exciting! Although we did have a lot of big wins in 2018, I'd say that raising our daughter was our biggest achievement, and watching her grow was our greatest adventure. ❤ Thank you, 2018, for the gift of love and family. Thank you to all the wonderful people who helped us survive our first year as parents. Thank you to everyone who opened work opportunities for us so we could provide for our daughter's needs. Thank you to the brands and companies who trusted us and supported us in our parenthood journey. With a grateful heart, we wish you all a Happy New Year!
