Instagram-worthy.
Is that even a real word? Now, it is. It’s an adjective used to describe something exceptionally pretty, amazing, or cool that it just needs to be photographed and shared online for the whole world to see and admire.
If there is one restaurant in Bali that deserves to be called “Instagram-worthy,” it’s Sardine.
It’s such a pretty place that if you tell me that you have been here before only to take selfies and take photos without actually eating here, I will not judge you. (In fact, I would say “Yay! Good on you!”)
So don’t judge me too when you read this entire blog post without seeing any food photos. I swear to God, Mike and I ate here. But to explain why there are no food shots, or even shots of me and my husband:
- We walked for about 20-30 minutes under the intense heat of the afternoon Bali sun to get to this restaurant. We underestimated the heat and the distance of the restaurant from our villa to the restaurant, and by the time we got there, we were already tired, sweaty, irritable, and hungry. Put all these words together in one sentence and you know that a disaster is about to happen! So under those circumstances, we weren’t exactly ready for a photo.
- A few minutes after we arrived at the restaurant, Mike and I had a lovers’ quarrel. Yes, on our honeymoon. It started out with something petty (it usually does!) and escalated mid-way through our lunch. So when the beautifully-plated food arrived, I was thinking, “Damn, I really want to take a photo of our food! But no, we’re having a little tiff. It would be so weird and insensitive if I started taking #foodporn shots.”
So in the absence of food photos, I have just taken plenty of photos of the restaurant, which is just as delightful as the food. With a lovely view of the rice fields and the darling ducks and ducklings wading and wandering around, this really is a great place to have a date with your sweetheart. With such a pleasant place as this, it’s hard to understand how we could even get annoyed at each other! Well, at least even if we were not love-struck and in a cheery mood that day, the view somehow soothed our nerves.
I hope my photos of this restaurant soothe your nerves too!
So Sardine is pretty, but is that all? Or is there something else to come back for aside from the beautiful view?
Food
Mike ordered the Pan Seared Kingfish while I had the Sautéed Wild Snapper, both for IDR 150K (PHP 538 / USD 12). To be honest, I couldn’t appreciate the food very much because of the mood we were in at that time but I do remember my food to be very light. The flavors were very delicate and the texture of the fish was soft. It also tasted fresh, and I found out later that Sardine uses organic ingredients from their farm and the menu changes daily depending on the catch of the day at the fishing village in Jimbaran. Though it wasn’t the most mind-blowing and memorable meal I’ve had in Bali, I think the food was good and satisfying for seafood lovers. Another plus point would be the free bread basket they give to all customers.
Price
Don’t expect it to be dirt cheap though. There are cheaper alternatives for seafood in Seminyak but if you do want to dine in a cozy yet classy restaurant with a spectacular view, prepare to pay a little extra. Lunch offerings range from IDR 60-180K per item (PHP 215-645 / USD 5-14) per item while the dinner menu may cost you IDR 90-350K per item (PHP 323-1,256 / USD 7-27).
Service
The day that we visited the restaurant, there were a lot of people dining for lunch, so we didn’t really expect hands-on service from their staff. Surprisingly, they were very proactive. One of them came up to ask how the food was and if everything was okay. Another one kept refilling our water without us even having to ask. And when I asked about their bestsellers, the staff was very knowledgeable and carefully explained the menu. I can’t say anything bad about the service from my experience.
Sardine is a fine choice for a lunch or dinner date… or a casual brunch with friends (preferably those who enjoy taking photos as much as you do!). If you are in Bali and are celebrating something special or simply just want to dine in a picture-perfect place, Sardine is an excellent choice.
As for me and Mike, don’t worry, we kissed and made up later that day. We always do. 🙂
