Sunnies Cafe in Bonifacio High Street

Sunnies Cafe is an all-day brunch restaurant founded by supermodel (and my little sister’s ultimate girl crush) Georgina Wilson, together with her other pretty model gal pals Martine Cajucom and Bea Soriano, who also pioneered the famous local eyewear brand, Sunnies Studios. For the final celebration on my birthday week, I had dinner at Sunnies Cafe with Mike, my best friend Aspe, and our friend Eric (the only other leap year baby I know aside from myself).

I’ve always wanted to try Sunnies Cafe, but since we were with two manly men, I wondered, “Isn’t that place a little too girly?” Check out Sunnies Cafe’s Instagram feed and you’ll see all the dainty pink elements and purty food shots, not to mention, it’s owned by the “it girls” of the Philippines, so I thought it might be too feminine (and too millennial) for my boys. But when we got there, Mike said it looked fine, so we went in and ordered.

Okay, so the interiors are pretty, but it’s not as girly as I thought it would be! It really did look like a nice place to have brunch. With its pastel tones and warm colors, it was cozy but also stylish. I’ve never been to California, but I can imagine that this is the kind of thing that I’d see there! There was an upstairs area, but when we asked if we could sit there, the waiter said it was closed, so we just sat on one of the couches facing the bar, which was still a good spot.

The food menu is actually pretty small compared to their drinks list. They offer various flavors of coffee, hot teas, iced teas, milkshakes, fruit shakes, sodas, and water. And yes, you are seeing a bar there because if you’re in the mood for a party drink, they also have cocktails, wines, and beers. An all-day brunch place where you can have all-day alcohol? Sounds perfect!

Our orders:

Truffle Taters (PHP 190) – crispy potatoes, truffle, parmesan cheese, and truffle aioli

Anything with truffle is a hit in my book! The potatoes are good on their own — crunchy, a little bit cheesy, and not too salty — but it was really the truffle sauce that made me reach for more. I wish there was more sauce!

Sunnies Risotto (PHP 370) – Grana Padano cheese, risotto, caramelized bacon, sous vide egg, homemade gravy

So far, this is my favorite dish from Sunnies Cafe! It’s really rich and creamy, and has a delicate and cheesy flavor. The sous vide egg on top made it extra delish! I could have finished this all by myself, I think. The serving could be a little bigger, in my opinion. It was a little small for the price. Would I have this again? Yes… and this time, no more sharing. Haha!

Sunnies Risotto

Creamy Carbonara (PHP 260) – Linguini, smoked bacon, sous vide egg, grana padano cheese

The creamy carbonara was creamy, all right! Aspe and I made the mistake of ordering the risotto AND the carbonara together. They were both good, but when eaten together, it feels a bit… redundant. They taste almost the same — both are creamy, thick, and cheesy, and both even have the sous vide egg on top. It was kind of like eating the same thing, except that one is in rice form and the other one is in pasta form, though I would say that the risotto is more flavorful, and the carbonara has a lighter taste. We liked the carbonara too! It’s not the best and most outstanding carbonara I’ve ever had, but it’s nice, though it could do with more bacon bits.

Creamy Carbonara

Baked Squid Ink Lasagna (PHP 360) – Crispy calamares, creamy cheese sauce, homemade tomato jam, basil oil

This was Mike’s dish, and when the waiter put the plate in front of him, we all had the same sentiments: this plate is too tiny for a big guy like him. Haha! But we underestimated it. Mike actually got full after eating it. This one was cheesy and had generous servings of calamari. I think I remember him saying that he liked it, though it didn’t really taste like squid that much, so it was really just a black version of lasagna.

Baked Squid Ink Lasagna

Honey Garlic Crispy Chicken (PHP 290) – Crispy chicken, pickled cucumbers, cilantro lime rice

This was Eric’s order. I didn’t try it but he said it was good too.

Honey Garlic Crispy Chicken

Sunnies Funfetti (PHP 290) – Creamy tres leches cake, whipped cream, salted caramel ice cream, birthday sprinkles

Mike said to me “You only ordered that because it looks cute, didn’t you?” Err… sort of. I got it because it’s cute and photogenic, but also because I love tres leches and salted caramel! What could be better than that? And also… it’s got birthday sprinkles! It was my birthday, so I wanted my birthday sprinkles!

Sunnies Funfetti

The Sunnies Funfetti was moist and creamy, and had a light milky flavor without being too sweet. I might be biased here, but the best part for me was the salted caramel ice cream. Since the cake itself was not diabetes levels-sweet, the more sugary taste of the salted caramel ice cream blended well with the cake. Wheeee!!! The 8-year-old in me was feeling giddy and happy! Meanwhile, the 33-year-old in me couldn’t get enough of it. I think that this is a dessert that will be enjoyed by anyone and everyone, whether they’re 8 or 33.

Black Bottom Banana Cream Pie (PHP 340) – Oreo-crusted pie, fresh bananas, silky cream filling, whipped cream

For me, the Sunnies Funfetti was more “Instagrammable,” more colorful, and more fun, but taste-wise, I have to admit that the Black Bottom Banana Cream Pie is the yummier dessert. I loved the combination of the airy and fluffy whipped cream, the delicious Oreo pie, the unmistakable banana flavor, and the sweet caramel drizzle. Even if it’s rich (and obviously fatty, let’s not kid ourselves), it didn’t feel too heavy, perhaps because the cream was light and the fact that it has fruits in it! No wonder it’s the restaurant’s best-selling dessert!

Black Bottom Banana Cream Pie

I’ve been reading mixed reviews about Sunnies Cafe before our visit. Some loved it, while some say that it’s all aesthetics and no flavor or value. My experience has been good so far, so I wouldn’t hesitate to come back and try their other dishes. While the menu is limited and the food isn’t what I would call extremely exceptional, we all thought the food was enjoyable, the service was fine, the ambiance was charming, and yes, the aesthetics helped too. Most of the food and drinks are priced reasonably. Though some dishes are pricier than the others, I have yet to see how big the portions are.

The leap year birthday babies and their loves, bonding over good food!

  1. Why did you say that this might be something you’d see in California? Is it the theme of the restaurant? I was surprised with the truffle taters! That looks so yummy and I also love truffles! The Sunnies Risotto looks like an appetizer for me, I wouldn’t order that as a main course as I’ll be definitely hungry for more. The best dish I think is the honey garlic crispy chicken, I think that’s what I’ll have if I ever go there. :p

  5. I agree with you, it does give off a California vibe! Not that I’ve spent longer than a few days in CA, but I totally see it too!
The menu looks so tasty. I like the sound of pan-seared miso salmon, and the banana cream pie looks delicious!

    1. Haha I’ve never even been to California and yet I am getting that vibe. The Pan-seared Miso Salmon sounds great too! 🙂 I think you will love the Banana Cream Pie.

  6. The food looks interesting but seems quite expensive going by the portion sizes. Frankly, I haven’t heard many of the menu items you have mentioned here but I really loved reading and learning about some new delicacies. The way you have described the food made it all the more interesting. I have never tasted truffles and would love to try it some day.

  8. The sad thing about Sunnies Cafe is the serving and price. I’ve been there too and the place is Instagrammable. Like you can take pretty shots almost everywhere inside. What we ordered were just the skinny fries and Charlie drink. The drinks are great and tasty!

    1. Well, according to my husband, he got full with the lasagna he ordered. So maybe some of the dishes are pretty filling. 🙂 The place and the food are both Instagrammable! 🙂 I’ll try the Skinny Fries and Charlie drink next time. Thanks for the suggestion!

  11. Thanks for your detailed review. I was looking at their menu once and I had second thoughts on it. I think they’re a little pricey having those small serving size you’ve got. The Banana Cream Pie looks yummy indeed! But seems expensive for Php 340.

    1. You’re welcome! True, the Banana Cream Pie was a tad too pricey at PHP 340 so I suggest splitting it with another dessert lover 🙂

  13. Everything looks so good especially the chicken and the funfetti cake! YUM, I would definitely walk out of there feeling really full haha. I actually prefer restaurants with smalled food menus because I am so indecisive! Truffle anything is also A+ in my books and those taters looked perfect!

    1. It does help to have a small menu. 🙂 It’s easier for indecisive people like us to order! Yes, truffle anything is life! 🙂

  14. For me, I’d rather go to another place that I can get most out of my money. Especially risottos, I love them! I don’t want to be left hanging for more. I think this is too expensive compared to the servings. Thanks for this review.

    1. You’re welcome! I think it is a good place for big groups so you can share and sample as many dishes as you want. There were 4 of us and out bill amounted to PHP 2,000+

  15. The menu looks amazing, not small in my opinion. I don’t understand the currency conversion so can’t say about price. But looking at the pics and the menu, seems to be a fair serving for what you are paying for…. I am a sucker for all things coffee, so I would say that would be where most of my money would be spent. Thanks for the review!

    1. I should have included the USD rates! Thanks for reminding me. 🙂 The food isn’t ridiculously expensive, and the serving isn’t THAT small. It would be nice to add a bit more, especially for the Taters! 🙂

  16. Every segment you have just described adds to the overall impression of the place. It makes it unique in a way. Looking at your photos, I wanted to try each and every meal you shared with us. The interior is also very nice. So, I would go for this place definitely.

    1. Glad this post enticed you to try Sunnies. 🙂 It’s worth going to. I hope you enjoy the food and the ambiance as much as we did.

  17. To be honest I didn’t like Sunnies Cafe. Sure it has cure interiors but the food is expensive but the taste leaves so much to be desired. I was so disappointed I think my looloo review sounded more like a rant than a review haha… But my point is if I was going to pay so much for a food then it should be really good. I just couldn’t accept that I would pay a lot and not get my money’s worth.

    1. Haha! I should read your Looloo review! At least you were being honest. 🙂 We liked the food, but I wouldn’t call it super cheap.

  19. I’ve never tried this cafe. I keep on seeing it on my feeds and some of my friends recommend. Never knew that a famous sunnies which is one of the known eye wear line could have its own cafe or restaurant. Very unique one though, I would really give this a shot. Love the article!
